Transitioning to a new family

Post  brownize on Tue 24 Nov 2009, 6:31 am

Hi fellow au pairs,

I am a new au pair, and have been in the US for only 2 months. Things did not work out with my host family and I am currently in my 2 week transition period.

My current host family has a condition that I cannot choose a new family within a 50 mile radius. Is this standard? I have never heard of this. The worst part is that I did find a new family (through my agency) but they are about 20 miles away, and my current host family (specifically the mother) refuses to allow acceptance of this offer and my agency is of no help. They are taking her side in all of this. I feel punished and I feel taken advantage of. I have no support from my agency.

What can I do? I have only one week left in my transition period. What happens if you don't find a family? Can I go stay with some relatives meanwhile? Is my J-1 visa still valid? Or am I illegal?
